Not knowing what to do | Story 36 ~ Jonna Jinton
Taking Me High Taking Me Low – Johan Glossner feat. Jason Dering
Review
Not knowing what to do is a video posted in January 2020 by Swedish YouTuber, Jonna Jinton. Though Jonna includes six other songs for the soundtrack of her video, Taking Me High Taking Me Low by Johan Glossner feat. Jason Dering, I feel, stands out. It’s actually a recurring song in a few of her videos. Background music really does go a long way. And being able to choose the most suiting musical accompaniment makes for an even better viewing of a particular video or film. Like any good narrative, good music gives for a better experience of the story or musical.
I think that Glossner’s song in particular, has a very homely feel to it. Like something you would listen to on a cold winter night when it’s snowing outside. Or when there’s a cool, humid evening breeze. The lyrics start off with “I’ve heard a story, I’ve heard it said”, and though the song is more or less repetitive the acoustics are quite soothing.
Strikingly enough, the video description includes, which I think is very well said – “From the heart of the mountains to the heart of the city, and back to my wonderful home.” I really do think that her soundtrack reflects this movement. It reflects her transit from one place to another. From the vast white-topped landscape of the North of Sweden to the buzzing warmth of Stockholm. Music accompaniment functions this way. It’s synchronised to certain transitions in the video that let us know there’s a change. Like when the main character moves from one setting to another. Soundtracks function this way; either abruptly or gradually indicating the transitioning of the setting. Music can directly influence our reception and our feelings. Putting and setting the context to the content that we are both listening to and watching.
I feel that much of the music Jonna chooses conveys and sort of mirrors the personal experiences she shares with her viewers. And in this video, opening up about a heavy heart and appreciation.
